While on a gig in Copenhagen, Denmark, he spoke with Neon Jazz about a long road he has etched in the jazz world .. the son of Italian immigrants in Boston, he grew up in a music rich household that started him well on his way .. Over the years, he has gigged with the best in the business .. With cats like Joe Lovano, Randy Brecker, Kenny Barron and so many more .. As an educator, he has taught the best – cats like Branford Marsalis and Joshua Redman .. He’s a man full of wit, stories, wisdom and a helluva good jazz bio ..

Natalie Bates of Kansas City's 5-Star Jazz Band

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with drummer and Assistant Director of the Kansas City Based 5-Star Jazz Band. The 5 Star Jazz Band is a unique North Kansas City Cinderella-success story started in July 2008 by three talented students from North Kansas City High School. With no money or experience organizing an all-volunteer community enterprise, they set out to form a student-run jazz band comprised of musicians from middle and high schools .. and they have done just that. Over the course of our interview, Natalie talked about the bands history, what they want to give to audiences, how they feel about KC jazz and what the future may hold ..

He has been dubbed the Low Woodwind Expert and he has had a very interesting journey towards his latest, very delightful album called The Deep Below .. He grew up in Reno, Nevada and began playing music at 12, then went professional at 16 .. He’s toured the world with Esperanza Spalding and gigged with cats like Jerry Bergonzi ..
