Kansas City Jazz Duo A La Mode

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with KC Jazz Duo A La Mode or bettern known as  Clayton DeLong and Jesica “Baby J” Poell .. They are busy promoting their newest and very tasty new album 2016’s Cest Si Bon .. The duo met at the once hoppin’ KC jazz house Jardine’s and discovered their shared chemistry .. Clayton is on the guitar and over the years studied under Kansas City greats such as Rod Fleeman, Danny Embrey, and Bobby Watson .. while Jesica takes care of the vocals and studied classical voice for 8 years and attended Stephens College in Columbia, MO, pursing a degree in Musical Theatre Performance .. Together, they have checmistry, a great Paul McCartney story, dreams, music and ambition ..

Reimaging Benny Goodman and is continuing to teach a his music education program that was created 11 years ago .. Timbalooloo – He has delivered it to over 2,000 children in New York City – to kids in in 23 countries and has been endorsed by Hollywood heavies like Harvey Keitel, Naomi Watts, & Edie Falco ..

Kansas City Jazz Drummer Todd Strait

Spinning 45’s his dad had lying around .. big band era and the like .. He would go on to New York to learn from the best and play with Marian McPartland .. From there, he came to Kansas City and jumped into a very rich scene and played with the likes of Bob Bowman and Karryn Allison .. Then, he went to Portland and back to Kansas City .. Jazz Pianist & Composer Frank Kimbrough

He spent his childhood in Roxboro, North Carolina .. then would move on to Chapel Hill and then to Washington DC .. That culminated to his current home of New York City in 1981 when you could afford to live there.. He played and learned from the best like Herbie Nichols – He spoke about his newest 2016 album Solstice – and he’s very happy about it .. He’s a big name in jazz and has been recognized by his the Downbeat Critics Poll each year since 2001 and just keeps on playing all over the place, recording and teaching at Julliard ..

Legendary Jazz Bassist & Educator John Clayton

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Legendary Jazz Bassist, Composer, Arranger, Conductor, Producer & Educator John Clayton  .. He grew up in LA and In 1969, at the age of 16, he enrolled in bassist Ray Brown’s jazz class at UCLA – that would prove huge in his leap into jazz .. He spoke to Neon Jazz about his latest 2016 CD Soul Brothers with the Clayton Brothers .. After he graduated from Indiana University’s School of Music with a degree in bass performance in 1975, he toured with the Monty Alexander Trio, then spent time with the Count Basie Orchestra, the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and in the mid-80s set up the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra – and that has been a mainstay in his life .. Soon he will be collaborating with Quincy Jones and has played with the best around over the years .. Like Diana Krall, Paul McCartney and Regina Carter –

Legendary Jazz Vibraphonist Jay Hoggard

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Veteran Jazz Vibraphonist Jay Hoggard  .. He was born in Washington DC and grew up in Mt. Vernon, NY  -  age 15, he began playing the vibraphone after having a dream about it .. His latest album in a long string of quality jazz LPs is 2016’s Harlem Heiroglyphics .. His journey into music really took off when he majored in the renown World Music program at Wesleyan University  and for the last 20 years he’s been a Full Professor of Music at his alma mater .. Over the years, he’s toured Europe & the world .. played at Carnegie Hall - traveled to Tanzania and well beyond with his music .. He’s collaborated with masters Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson, Tito Puente and Bobby Hutcherson and still has plenty of jazz legacy to etch ..

Jazz Sax & Composer Seamus Blake

Originally born in England and raised in Vancuver, Canada, this New York City cat has had a very long and savory 24 year career .. He is still on the heels of promoting his 2015 CD Superconductor and he’s always a busy cat .. During the same year, he was on a project nominated for a Grammy with the great pianist Gonzalo Bubalcaba .. In 2002, took first place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in Washington D. C. As the winner and got to perform with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock .. Jazz Alto Sax Richie Cole

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Alto Saxophonist Richie Cole  .. He grew up in Trenton, New Jersey and would always dream of being a jazz cat .. These days he lives in Pittsburg, PA and is digging the release of 2016’s Richie Cole Plays Ballads & Love Songs .. His early influences were Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker and he got his start in the jazz journey by getting a scholarship from Downbeat Magazine to the Berklee School of Music – and that got him out of Vietnam .. He was baptized well in the early years by being in the Buddy Rich Big Band, Lionel Hampton Big Band and the Doc Severinsen Big Band .. On over 50 albums and CDs – he played with the best ever .. cats like Bobby Enriquez, Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Stitt, Art Pepper, Tom Waits, Boots Randolph, and Nancy Wilson ..

Veteran Jazz Pianist Greg Murphy

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Pianist Greg Murphy  .. His musical adventures began in 1971 when he joined the Ray-Fisk Grammar School Band in Chicago and would lead him to his very latest 2016 album Summer Breeze .. His latest record  is 2016’s Frogtown and it’s another first in a career of firsts .. it’s his debut as a singer .. Always swayed by Duke Ellington, Gil Evans, Wes Montgomery, Ry Cooder, and T-Bone Walker – His first album in 1997 had a nine-piece “little big band” and got a Grammy nomination for Best Large Ensemble Jazz Recording – Since his father’s passing, he became the maestro of his ensamble in 2014 keeping the jazz alive and
he’s branched out beyond jazz playing with the likes of  Paul McCartney, Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, Aaron Neville, and Barbra Streisand – This is one deep, interesting and story rich cat ..

Jazz Sax, Flute, Composer and Arranger Don Braden

Don was born in Cincinnati and raised in Louisville  and in the 1980’s he went to Harvard as an Engineering major – After writing code for software in NYC for some time, music won out .. He went on to jam with cats like Lonnie Smith, Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis Roy Haynes, Freddie Hubbard, JJ Johnson, Art Farmer .. Over his career he has recoded over 19 CDs as a leader and 80 as a sideman .. And there’s always more to come now that he’s taking a break from teaching ..

Italian Jazz Pianist Dino Massa on "Echoes of Europe"

He took some time from him home in Italy to speak with Neon Jazz in Kansas City to discuss a collaborative album a new CD venture called “Echoes of Europe” that will be avaiblabe worldwide on January 2, 2017 – This came about after an encounter with KC-based alto saxophonist and composer Christopher Burnett in 1990 when Burnett played in the NATO Jazz Band then headquartered in Naples – Together, they put together a project full of modern swing tune with some of the fullest-sounding orchestration – Dino dicusseed this album, his life in jazz and so much more ..

Legendary Jazz Drummer Louis Hayes

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with prolific legendary jazz drummer Louis Hayes  –  This Detroit native is still going very strong in the jazz world .. In 2015, he released a beautiful new album called Return of the Jazz Communicators – So, in those early Detroit days things were hopping and he was gigging with Yusef Lateef, Kenny Burrell and Doug Atkins – that led him to New York City and gigs early on with Horace Silver and Cannonball Adderly  - and that only opened the gates to a mass of gigs with the likes of Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Barron, Woody Shaw and Dexter Gordon .. He is a 79 years old and sounds hungier than ever to keep the grand jazz wagon rolling forth ..

Jazzmobile Director Robin Bell-Stevens

She spoke with Neon Jazz about a monolith in the jazz world ..  It all began in 1964 in NYC with Dr. Billy Taylor and ended up attracting the likes of  John Coltrane, Jimmy Heath, Dizzie Gillespie, Horace Silver, Pharoah Sanders, Albert Ayler, Archie Chep, Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor for an annual summer concert series, educational opportunities and being a general beacon for keeping jazz alive in America .. Veteran Jazz Sax & Composer Rich Halley

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Saxophonist Rich Halley.. He talked about his latest record 2016’s The Outlier .. This Oregon-based cat has turning out smart brawny music for a couple of decades - At 15, you discovered jazz, he immediately became intensely interested – Since then, he’s gone on some great adventures .. in 1965 and 1966 he lived & played in Cairo, Egypt  - went to the University of Chicago - moved back West and played in Latin bands .. He was educated as a field biologist and received a Master of Science in Biology from the University of New Mexico doing research on rattlesnakes – This is just a bit about a cat you should get to know ..

Jazz Trombonist and Composer Alan Ferber

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Trombonist, Composer & Teacher Alan Ferber .. He is now promoting his newest 2016 Roots and Transitions – which happens to be very raw and special to him these days .. He just swung through Kansas City in May and continues to stay very active .. Originally from Oakland, he is a fan of big outfits .. whether it’s a nonet or a 17-piece band and that has led to work with the likes of Esperanza Spalding - Dr. Lonnie Smith Octet - Ted Nash - Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lee Konitz and music minds outside of jazz like Peter Gabriel - Paul Simon -  Dr. Dre and many others .. He’s a prolific sort .. with over 150 CD’s to his credit .. He’s got a lot of mileage on his jazz odometer and many tasty insights  ..

Veteran Jazz Pianist Phil DeGreg in KC

He has been at this jazz gigging for quite some time and he’s a colossal talent .. On August 18, 2016, he swung through a town he lived in for a time to hook up with Old Friends .. right here in Kasnas City .. he was at the Blue Room off 18th and Vine with the KC Quintet featuring the great Stan Kessler and even got a surprise visit from the great saxophonist Tivon Petticoat .. I caught up with him during a break to talk about his appearance during the special Charlie Parker week here in August 2016 ..

Jazz Hammond B-3 Organist Adrienne Fenemor

Originally from New Zealand Native and now in New York City, she just released a very nice 2016 album called Blue's Jam – and Mo Puddin’ was done a year prior .. Trombone was her native instrunment growing up, but she taught herself to play the Hammond B-3 copying recordings by Jimmy Smith, Joey DeFrancesco, Groove Holmes and Jack McDuff – Since then, she has become a big name in the jazz world and for great reason ..
