Toronto-based Guitarist & Composer Eric St-Laurent

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Toronto-based Guitarist & Composer Eric St. Laurent  .. The philosopher Joseph Campbell wrote extensively about “following one's bliss.” These influential writings form the conceptual basis for Bliss Station, the 13th album of original music by called Bliss Station .. He was born and raised in Montreal and went on to study improvisation in New York before moving to Berlin, where he toured with both big and small names in the German and Scandinavian music scenes. Over the years, he’s recorded and toured with the likes of Dave Liebman, Dave Binney, Dave Douglas and so many others ..

Kansas City Jazz Saxophonist Brad Gregory

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Kansas City-Based Saxophonist Brad Gregory .. He was born and raised Edmonton, Alberta Canada and was taught by G Gordon Nicholson and was heavily influenced by many of the great Edmonton musicians such as PJ Perry and Tommy Banks. He went on to the University of North Texas and was a member of the One O’Clock Lab Band – then it was on to the Houston Jazz Orchestra – working in New York City as a professional jazz musician and then he began a full-time career in the plastics industry and relocated his family to Kansas City. He is a fixture in the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra and the Boulevard Big Band .. He’s got a great story .. So, get to know him and dig this interview my friends ..

Sweden-born, NYC Jazz Guitarist Tomas Janzon

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Sweden-born, NYC Jazz Guitarist Tomas Janzon .. His 2019 CD 130th and Lenox is exactly where he lives in Harlem and is a homage to where he calls home and plays music .. He was born in Stockholm, Sweden and his musical quest started at the age of 7 playing the recorder. At 8 he began studying the cello and by 12 was performing with the chamber orchestra  - then it would be the guitar. Once he arrived in Los Angeles  - he would study with Joe Diorio at Musicians Institute/GIT and taught as an adjunct faculty member from 1995 to 2008. In 2001 he went to Canada teaching as Artist-in-Resident  and since 2002 he’s been residing in New York and very busy with touring and teaching throughout the US, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Austria – He’s a fascinating cat .. She opened up about her social & politically minded 2019 CD Aftermath with her group ..  Chelsea McBride’s Social Night School .. She was born and raised in Vancouver B.C. and surrounded and fascinated by music. She started playing piano at the age of 3, and saxophone throughout elementary school. By the end of high school she had already performed in competitions at provincial and national levels. Sh has been named one of Canada’s top 35 jazz musicians under 35 by the CBC and was the inaugural recipient of the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Emerging Jazz Artist Award. He future is quite bright .. Cuban Pianist, Vocalist, Composer & Producer Roberto Fonseca

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview with Cuban pianist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and bandleader Roberto Fonseca .. He is Cuban-born and based and  has released nine solo albums, collaborated across genres, been nominated for a Grammy Award and toured the world several times over .. We caught up with him about his lastest album – the  2019 CD Yesun .. So, his father played the drums and his mother was a dancer .. That swayed him quite a bit .. his first professional gig was in a Beatles cover band – before taking up piano aged eight. He has been composing his own music since adolescence. He has been called an artist with prowess and ideas -  with a questing jazz sensibility and deep roots in the Afro-Cuban tradition .. German Saxophonist & Composer Gebhard Ullmann

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with German Saxophonist, Clarinetist, Flutist & Composer Gebhard Ullmann .. At the age of six, he started to play the recorder then the classical flute, and that has branched out to the saxophone .. He spent quality time studying with the great Herb Geller and Dave Liebman and at the University of Hamburg .. He also studied medicine, but ultimately picked music and he’s soared ..  Over time, he’s been all over the world and recorded more than 50 CDs as a leader or co-leader .. and for a while, he lived between New York City and Berlin. Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview with Kansas City Jazz Violinist Adam Galblum… He has a great story about his 2015 CD Down to the Wire Stringband Tribute to the Music of John Mayer  - These days, he is a staple on the thriving Kansas City Jazz scene and he grew up in Overland Park, KS - He was was a student of 1st generation Count Basie Band alum and legendary jazz violin pioneer Claude "Fiddler" Williams, in the 1990s – then went on to attended Berklee College of Music in Boston and lived in the Denver area from 2005-2014 touring nationally with bluegrass bands – These days you can catch him as the bandleader of Hot Club KC & Hot Club Trio, along with being a part of Splitting Atoms. Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview with Japanese-born Pianist, Composer and Leader of the Band Doggy Cats Tetsuro Hoshii .. His band has a new CD out called Daikon Pizza .. and it’s a good one .. He’s originally from Japan, came to the Berklee College of Music on Scholarship and now resides in New York City ..  The Doggy Cats is a six-piece brass started in New York City in 2015 and the band ranges widely in age from 20’s to 50’s and have collected many influences along the way—from New Orleans jazz to cartoons—resulting in an eclectic, non-classifiable new music of joy .. Jazz Saxophone Virtuoso James Carter

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Saxophone Virtuoso James Carter ..  He opened up about his latest 2019 CD - James Carter Organ Trio: Live From Newport Jazz  .. He’s now at 50 and making his debut as a bandleader for Blue Note Records .. Born in 1969 in Detroit, he began playing at age 11 and studied early on with trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. As a prodigy, he progressed quickly and by 1986 at age 17 joined Wynton Marsalis on tour. He had six recordings under his own name between 1993 and 2000 and has been lauded for his prowess of the jazz bandstand .. He opened up about quite a bit .. The lyrics reference Toussaint's songs, paint a picture of the kind person he was, and express sadness of him no longer being with us. NYC Jazz Guitarist, Composer & Arranger Peter Hand

Jazz Vocalist Rebekah Victoria

She grew up in her family-owned nightclub in Los Altos, California, singing with her father’s Greek band. She would go on to get her college degree in business and become a real estate broker .. but, she also took formal singing lessons and theater classes and always had signing in her heart .. Jazz Bassist Nick Blacka of the UK Jazz Group GoGoPenguin

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with UK Jazz Bassist Nick Blacka of the Modern Band GoGo Penguin .. They just released a new EP .. 2019’s Ocean in a Drop (Music for Film) .. The band came together in 2012 and they all had rich music backgrounds .. thus, GoGo Penguin began .. Their first labum – 2014’s v2.0 was the Mercury Prize album of the year .. In 2015 they were signed to Blue Note Records and today they are rocketing through the jazz stratosphere .. joining Nick is Chris Illingworth on piano and Rob Turner on the drums creating a unique sound that is acoustic-electronica drawing of  rock, jazz and minimalism, computer game soundtracks and glitchy-electronica to create vibe .. And in case you are wondering about the name .. this is how it came about – A few of the guys got drunk at the rag-week auction and Pete a weird looking stuffed penguin - his girlfriend was terrified of it and wouldn’t have it in the house, so Grant put it up in his house .. after they got their first gig at Sandbar in Manchester - they desperately needed a name, so they started throwing ideas about and the penguin telepathically gave them solution. - ‘Penguin’, ‘Go Penguin’ and eventually ‘Gogo Penguin’.
