Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Kansas City-born, NYC-based Jazz Vocalist & Visual Artist Lucy Wijnands .. She just made quite a name for herself by being the Winner of the 4th Ella Fizgerald Competiton on what would have been her 104th birthday on April 25th, 2021. This has opened some doors to new gigs as the world of live jazz wakes up. She was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri & got her start performing with her father, master of stride piano and KC fixture Bram Wijnands. From a very young age, she sang with her father in many jazz clubs in Kansas City .. These days she is recent graduate and the Ella Fitzgerald scholar at the Conservatory of Music at SUNY Purchase .. During the quarantine, she picked up the brush and is now a visual artist .. Her story is a captivating one .. Enjoy ..
