Jazz Guitarist & Composer Matthew Stevens

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Guitarist & Composer Matthew Stevens  He grew up in Toronto, Canada and loved the aura of Jimi Hendrix .. He’s on the heels of promoting his 2015 debut album Woodwork and has a lot to say about his career .. He got some good education at the Berklee College of Music and moved on to play with the NEXT Collective, Christian Scott,  Esperanza Spalding, and Harvey Mason – Along with travelling extensively giving fans his music and recording, he is a member of the adjunct faculty at the New School and loves it .. He was just chosen by DownBeat as one of the 25 rising stars in jazz ..

NYC Jazz Guitarist Peter Bernstein

Over the course of our conversation, he talked about his latest 2016 album Let Loose and a career that has given him an opportunity to be around great teachers and musicians .. at the New School he met and learned the legendary guitarist Jim Halll – Then, he was discovered by alto sax legend Lou Donaldson and learned from legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb .. This would lead to tenures and touring with Joshua Redman’s band and Diana Krall’s quartet from .. Born and raised in New York City, he’s been a vital part of the Manhattan scene since 1989 and has quite a few stories ..

Photographer, Music Producer, Engineer and Composer Terry Manning

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Cat, Photographer, Music Producer, Engineer and Composer Terry Manning  ..  This very talented renaissance man is releasing his new 2016 album Planets with his trio 3@Sea featuring his DJ/producer son, Lucas Manning, and flutist and orchestral player, Christine Gangelhoff. It’s a sonic landscape flush with jazz, classical elements and much more .. He was raised in El Paso, TX and learned quite a bit in his early years from the great musician Bobby Fuller who sang the song  "I Fought The Law" – He’s snapped many photos of music luminaries like Booker T. Jones, Isaac Hayes, ZZ Top, Lenny Kravitz and many more .. but is was in Memphis on April 3, 1968 that he captured the last images of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Terry is also prolific as a music producer and engineer .. He’s got a fascinating story ..

Jazz Drummer, Composer & Teacher Allison Miller

grew up in the Washington DC area and her dad had a professional studio in their house where she grew up listening to pros recording amazing jazz music .. and she started out on the drums at 10 and loves them .. cannot live without them .. She is currently promoting her 2016 release Otis was a Polar Bear – and that will include a swing through Kansas City on June 30, 2016 at the Blue Room on 18 and Vine .. Along with the music, she is a teacher at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in NYC .. She learned from the best – Dr. Michael Carvin when she arrived in New York in 1996 and talks about the lessons she got from him .. along with many more tales ..

Jazz Piano, Ukelele & Vocals Joanna Wallfisch

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Vocalist & Pianist Joanna Wallfisch .. She grew up in London in a very musical family .. she is the daughter of classical cellist Raphael and violinist Elizabeth – She is promoting her new 2016 album Gardens in My Mind – it includes folk, jazz, contemporary and indie pop music to create the textured tapestry of the album .. In addition to singing, she plays the piano and ukulele .. She made her way to New York City in 2012 and has gone on to tour and work with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Fred Hersch, Lee Konitz, Rob Garcia, and many others .. She opened up about her life in music, loving jazz and being a girl that needs to sing ..
