Former KC & Current NYC Jazz Bassist Craig Akin

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with KC Native and current NYC Jazz Bassist Craig Aiken .. He was born and raised in Oklahoma, then made his way to the University of Kansas and that led to a 10 year career in Kansas City .. He learned from KC jazz luminaries like Bob Bowman and Gerald Spaits and played countless shows in town .. From there, he would move on to New York City and learn under bass legend Ron Carter .. Since that time, he has played in thousands of Shows and remains very active with his band Roosevelt Dime out of Brooklyn, NY .. He’s got some great stories, a good KC lineage ..

Veteran Jazz Pianist Mike Jones

These days he’s promoting his very nice 2016 CD Roaring and it’s already charting well .. Author Neil Gaiman has said that he has magic jazz fingers and that could have led to his long running Vegas gig with Penn and Teller .. he does all the music for their shows .. In the early years, he got some good advice from legend Oscar Peterson on going to Berklee College of Music in Boston .. He’s fullla great stories and jazz insights ..

Legendary Jazz Composer & Pianist Carla Bley

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Composer, Bandleader, Organist and Pianist Carla Bley  ..  She went from being a girl in Oakland, California to becoming a jazz legend .. Her latest offering is 2016’s Andando El Tiempo CD .. She started out on the keys at 3 and had a concert at 4 – so, it’s safe to say that jazz was in her veins .. She would move on to NYC and become a cigarette girl at Birdland – that led to her seeing many in the scene at the time .. which was everyone ..from there, she met her first husband Paul Bley and went to LA in the mid 50’s – watching Ornette Coleman on a regular basis – Carla is full of incredible insights, great stories and surprises ..

Since her debut album “Journey to Journey” with a 13-piece chamber orchestra in 2012, she has been well on her way to a memorable career ..

Jazz Saxophonist & Composer Matt Parker

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with NYC Saxophonist Matt Parker  .. He’s releasing an impressive new 2016 album called Present Time with his Trio and that will be keeping him busy .. Over the course of our interview, he discussed a very pivotal trip to New Orleans he made at 17  and got to meet and play with Al Hirt .. That was a start for his career in jazz .. at 19 he would move on to New York City to study and play with cats like Junior Mance, Jane Ira Bloom, Reggie Workman, and Charlie Persip .. He’s gone on to play in South Africa and spots all over giving the world his blend of jazz goods ..

Jazz Pianist & Composer Aaron Diehl

NYC Trumpet Player, Singer & Songwriter Bria Skonberg

She just got signed onto Sony and is moving on to bigger and better things .. and in the June 20016 issue of DownBeat, she was called one of the top 25 rising stars in the world of jazz .. her last album was 2014’s In Your Own and she discussed that and how a girl from Chilliwack, British Columbia would go on to a big career in jazz .. She talked about her formal education at Capilano University in Canada and explaind how she has characterized as expanding the vocabulary and traditions of Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet with worldly rhythms and modern jazz variance –Bria is very active all over the globe and great things are happening in her world ..
