It is due for release on June 14th, 2019 and he talked at length about it .. The themes for the songs revolve around social themes and figures that provoke both thought and action .. Australian-born, NYC Double Bassist, Singer, Composer & Bandleader Georgia Weber

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Australian double bass player, singer, composer and bandleader Georgia Weber ..  Teamed up with her trio The Sleeved Hearts – she is geared up to release their new album, Keeping It Real. Combining experimental jazz with pop-punk and indie rock influences, the Australian-born artist mixes traditional jazz with modern creativity, the quirky with the beautiful on their 14-track album, due out on October 4th. The first single from the album, "House in Just My Name" will hit all digital streaming sites on May 24th.After graduating with her Bachelor in Jazz Double Bass Performance from Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, she fronted a pop-punk band in Brisbane. From there, she  moved to New York City in 2013 where she has performed and recorded with many artists and learned from the likes of the legend Ron Carter .. Jazz Leader and Trumpeter of the River Cow Orchestra E.E. Pointer

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Kansas City-based Jazz Trumpeter and Bandleader E.E. Pointer of the River Cow Orchestra .. We caught up with the leader of this cutting edge Kansas City jazz group to talk about some of their latest recordings .. like 2019’s CD The Intergalactic Love Men and he opens up about others, as well .. along with recent activity for this band of 12 musicians led by E.E. and featuring Greg Field (percussion, poetry), Michael LaGrega (violin, synthesizer), Brent Bowman (keyboard, alto sax), Ryan Jones (bass), Issaku Yamaashi (guitar), Grant Harse (bass), George Boje (guitar), Kristina Ning (bass), Scott Bosworth (drums), Connor Bowman (flute), Joe Shields (drums) .. And they are the essence of improv .. one take and that’s it .. if you heard it, remember it because it may not happen again .. always honing collective improvisation, similar to the New Orleans Jazz parades, paying attention to how each band member interacts with the group as a whole. Essentially celebrating music of the moment.

Multi-Faceted Canadian Composer, Conductor & Bandleader Jaelem Bhate

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Talented Canadian Jazz Musician Jaelem Bhate .. He opened up with us about his latest debut 2019 Debut CD On the Edge - After years of writing commissions and charts for his own ‘45th Avenue Jazz Band’, it was time for him to compile an album of his best work to date. He founded and directs the 45th Ave. Jazz Band, a 17-piece jazz orchestra that exclusively performs his compositions .. He’s from Vancouver, B.C. whose musical diversity has come to define his career. He would fetch his Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting at the University of British Columbia in 2019 and has gone on to conduct at the International Society for Contemporary Music Festival, the Canadian Music Center New Music and was selected as a conducting fellow at the prestigious Eastern Music Festival in the summer of 2019 – he’s got a great story ..

Veteran Jazz Bassist Avery Sharpe

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Veteran Jazz Bassist Avery Sharpe  .. He opened up with us about his newest 2019 CD 400 that is all about movement: from the Middle Passage to the Great Migration north, across to Europe in the World Wars and “home” again to the segregated U.S., to the upsurge of the freedom movement itself. He started playing piano at age eight and also studied accordion in his youth. He learned both electric and acoustic bass as a teenager, then studied with Reggie Workman at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. From there, he would play with the best in jazz and from 1984 to 2002 he was a part of McCoy Tyner’s Trio .. He has learned quite a bit of the years and has great insights ..

Veteran Omaha-born, NYC Jazz Guitarist Dave Stryker

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Veteran Omaha-born, NYC Jazz Guitarist Dave Stryker .. He opened up about his 3rd CD in a trilogy .. 2019’s Eight Track III .. He  grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and moved to New York City in 1980. After establishing himself in the local music scene, he joined organist Jack McDuff’s group for two years 1984-85. After leaving McDuff, Stanely Turrentine asked Stryker to join his quintet. From 1986-1995 he played with the legendary saxophonist and after 10 years of playing alongside the tenor legend – it helped him realize the importance of having his own sound. And he’s been working on that and a very busy career every since ..

Musician, Historian & Author Muneer Nasser on the 2018 book Upright Bass Chronicling The Musical Life and Legacy of Jamil Nasser

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Musician, Historian & Author of Jamil Nasser's 2018 book called Upright Bass, The Musical Life and Legacy – Muneer Nasser .. He talked about his life in music and his latest 2019 CD A Soldier’s Story… This new book Upright Bass chronicles his evolution from a young bassist on Beale Street to a top flight bassist on the New York Jazz scene.  Miles Davis harbored curiosity about the environment that produced Jamil and three Memphis musicians he hired in 1963. "I wondered what they were doing down there when all the guys came through that same school." His narrative captures the untold stories of two piano giants Phineas Newborn and Oscar Dennard. He also shares anecdotes about his mentors: Papa Jo Jones, Lester Young, Charles Mingus, Oscar Pettiford, and Ray Brown.

Jazz Bassist & Bandleader of The Heartland Trio Hannah Marks

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Bassist & Band Leader Hannah Marks of the Heartland Trio .. They are swinging through Kansas City on the front end of their tour at the MOD Gallery on May 9, 2019 .. The band was formed by Hanna in 2017 and also includes Barclay Moffitt on tenor saxophone, and Rocky Martin on drums.  Alongside their original compositions, Heartland Trio uses jazz standards, rock songs, and traditional folk tunes as vehicles for expression – and over all their sound reflects their desire to create with a gritty and spontaneous garage band mentality while exploring beyond the boundaries of the traditional roles of their instruments in a jazz setting. She also discussed their debut 2018 album simply called Year One.

Veteran Jazz Bassist & Educator Dave Zinno

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Veteran Jazz Bassist Dave Zinno.. He talked at length with Neon Jazz about his newest 2019 CD Stories Told with his Unisphere .. He has been performing professionally since 1980 and is a faculty member at the University of Rhode Island as well as at Brown University. After his studies at Berklee College of Music and the University of Rhode Island, he moved to Seattle, Washington, where he worked with Grammy winning vocalist Dianne Schuur for one year. Over his long career, he has gigged with jazz greats – like Julian Priester, Hadley Caliman, Frank Clayton .. He moved on to New York City where he studied with bassist Walter Booker Jr. and got thrown into some interesting shows .. He’s toured all over the world .. in Europe, South America, North Africa and throughout the United States ..
