Jamaican-born Jazz Piano Legend Monty Alexander

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jamaican Jazz Piano Legend Monty Alexander .. We elaborated on his latest 2019 CD Wareika Hill – covering the classic Thelonis Monk album and refers to a place in Jamaica where Rastafarian musicians used to gather located behind Monty's childhood home outside of Kingston. He looked at that hill quite a bit growing up .. 2019 is also a banner year in honor of celebrating his 75th birthday and six professional decades in the music industry – and he also got an honorary Doctorate from the University of the West Indies and was the a recipient of the Commander of Distinction title from Jamaican Prime Minister P.J. Patterson. Over time, he has played with the likes of Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson, Sonny Rollins and Clark Terry, but it was after his family moved to Miami, Florida, in 1961, where he played in various nightclubs and got attention of Frank Sinatra who flew him to New York .. New Orleans Jazz Saxophonist & Composer James Martin

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with New Orleans Saxophonist & Composer James Martin .. He explained the story behind his latest 2019 CD Keep Movin’- And got into how his music roots extend to his earliest years spent visiting his grandparents’ home in New Orleans. There he found an authentic alternative to the musically inspired toys and plastic replicas of instruments his parents had lovingly given him…in his grandparents’ organ. He managed to teach himself his first song—“When the Saints Go Marching In,” and that was a gateway to music .. a pawn shop guitar and then the saxophone .. He spent seven years playing with Trombone Shorty and then decided to pursue a solo career .. He’s got great stories and you can hear them all here .. So dig it ..

Veteran San Francisco-based Jazz Guitarist Ray Obiedo

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Veteran San Francisco-based Jazz Guitarist Ray Obiedo .. He opened up about is great 2019 CD Carousel .. His 9th release as yet another collection of original compositions fused with Contemporary Jazz, Latin and Brasilian-styled rhythms. He grew up in the East Bay and very early on recognized his own profoundly soulful musical connection to the Northern California region and its blend of exotic multi-ethnic rhythms. He had numerous trips across the bay to places like the Fillmore Auditorium & Winterland Auditorium to hear and go backstage to hang with legends Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, to the great Isaac Hayes and Sly Stone. Ohio-born, LA-based Jazz Vocalist Greje Angell

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Ohio-born, Los Angeles-based Jazz Vocalist Gretje Angell .. She opened up about her debut album .. the 2019 CD In Any Key .. A testament to years of woodshedding and self-growth and this album is dedicated to her father .. who was a also a jazz musician .. She was born in Akron, Ohio, and her earliest memories are the long, joyous nights spent in dark jazz clubs, falling asleep in booths while her father commanded the bandstand. Having two generations of jazz drummers ahead of her – she still chose to get up on the bandstand on her own time. She worked through a heavy dose of stage fright, welcomed motherhood, and studied classical and opera prior launching her jazz career.  She is big on the jazz underground performing regionally, nationally, and internationally leading her own ensembles, ranging from intimate guitar and vocal duos to full-band configurations ..

Veteran Kansas City-based Jazz Saxophonist David Valdez

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Veteran Kansas City-based Jazz Saxophonist David Valdez .. He opened up about his latest CD Shades of Happines and relocating to KC .. He was born in San Francisco in 1967 and grew up in Santa Cruz, California. He  picked up the saxophone at the age of 8 years old and never looked back .. Over the years, he has zig zagged around the United States .. he attended Berklee College - finishing his studies, he moved back to the West .. then went to New York City and then to Portland, Oregon's thriving Jazz scene and he relocated to Kansas City to pursue a Masters degree in Jazz composition at the University of Kansas – he loves it here and explains why .. along with much more . so get to know her and dig this interview my friends ..

Veteran Jazz Pianist Dave Bass

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Veteran Jazz Pianist Dave Bass .. He opened up about his stellar new 2019 CD No Boundaries with the great Ted Nash, Karrin Allyson,Carlos Henriquez, Jerome Jennings & More .. This kid from Cincinnati started piano lessons at age seven and shortly after graduating high school he played in bands that opened for Captain Beefheart and Alice Cooper .. In the mid-80s, after a random slip and fall on the way to a gig caused a seriously damaging wrist fracture, doctors did not offer a promising prognosis for him to ever play piano again. He defied the odds and after 20 years of being away from jazz and practicing law, he’s back full time .. and No Boundaries is just the beginning ..
