Jazz Bassist & Composer Kyle Eastwood

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Bassist & Composer Kyle Eastwood .. As usual, Kyle is releasing quality albums charting his evolution as a musician .. his latest offering is 2017’s In Transit .. So, he is the son of jazz lover Clint Eastwood and grew up listening to records by jazz legends such as Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Thelonious Monk – He went on to study film at the University of Southern California for two years before embarking on a music career – That has led to many albums on his own and being a part of scores for films like The Rookie (1990), Mystic River (2002), Million Dollar Baby (2004), Flags of Our Fathers (2006), and J. Edgar (2011).

Veteran Jazz Saxophonist Vincent Herring

He grew up in Hopkinsville, Kentucky and started playing saxophone at the age of 11 in school bands – He went on to play in the Military Academy Band at West Point and would work with Cedar Walton for more than 20 years – that led to gigs with the likes of Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Hayes, Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers and Horace Silver Quintet over a career that has produced over 20 titles as a leader and over 250 as a sideman .. Jazz Singer, Violinist & Author Nora Germain

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Violinist and Composer Nora Germain  .. She talked about her latest album Go For It .. And how she spent a lot of time growing up in Madison, Wisconsin – She was introduced to music by her violinist parents and cellist grandmother and went on to become the first ever violinist to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Jazz Studies from the renowned USC Thornton School of Music – She was mentored by Marshall Hawkins, former bassist for Miles Davis and has been around quite a bit at a young age with her sound and wisdom ..

Jazz Saxophonist Arhtur White

This solo artist, composer, and bandleader will be released on the Artists Recording Collective label in 2017 .. Originally from Kansas, he got his Bachelor of Arts in Music from Emporia State University, the Master of Music in Jazz Pedagogy from West Virginia University, and the Doctor of Musical Arts in Saxophone Performance from the University of North Carolina .. He keeps his home, and roots firmly planted, in the Midwest; resides in Columbia, MO and over the years he’s performed with the best around .. like Randy Brecker, Bobby Watson, Russell Malone, Mike Metheny, and Jimmy Greene .. For seven years, he was the director of jazz studies at the University of Missouri. .. He’s always at it getting jazz out there to both the fans and students ..

Veteran Jazz Saxophonist Greg Osby on His KC Visit & More

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Saxophonist, Composer and
Educator Greg Osby  .. He’s making his way to Kansas City to play a gig on October 20, 2017 at the new Black Dolphin club .. and he’s no stranger to the Show Me State .. Originally from St. Louis, he has been at this jazz game since the mid-70s and got some good lessons at both Howard Uniersity and Berklee College of Music .. He’s played with the best over the years .. a dream line up of cats like Jack DeJohnette, Dizzy Gillespie, Andrew Hill and so many others .. We caught up with him during a busy swing from Europe and a a stack of moments of reflection.

LA Jazz Bassist & Singer Katie Thiroux

She was born in a a musical family in Los Angeles -  beginning with violin lessons at age 4 then switching to the acoustic bass at age 8 – she loved the recordings of Lionel Hampton as a kid and began studying privately with jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton at the age of 12. Cuban-born Veteran Jazz Drummer Ignacio Berroa

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Cuban born Jazz Drummer Ignacio Berroa  .. He was born and raised in Cuba .. and is on the heels of releasing 2017’s Straight Ahead from Havana – His musical education at age 11 at the National School of Arts and really took off in 1980 when he left his country and settled in New York City where he met the great Cuban musician Mario Bauza who introduced him to Dizzy Gillespie. In August 1981 Gillespie invited Ignacio to join his quartet .. Since that time, he is the only and most successful straight ahead jazz drummer to come from Cuba and make it in America ..

Legendary Colorado Blues Performer Chris Daniels

Right outta St. Paul, Minnesota he began playing guitar when he was 10 and these days he’s promoting yet another new album .. 2017’s Blues With Horns .. So, in 1984, Daniels formed Chris Daniels & The R&B Kings - originally planned as a "Boulder one-nighter," the band has released 14 albums and toured extensively in the United States and completed 21 European tours. They have performed for three US presidents and the former queen of the Netherlands – He is a legend and a survivor .. He has beat acute leukemia in February and is a member of the Colorado Music Hall of Fame ..

Dave Berkman and Tim Armacost of the Jazz Group New York Standards Quartet

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Dave Berkman and Tim Armacost of the group New York Standards Quartet  .. Together, they talked about their latest 2017 album Sleight of Hand ..  So, Tim is a popular sax on the New York scene today - born in Los Angeles and played with legends like  Jimmy Cobb, Kenny Barron, Tom Harrell, and more .. While David is a phenomenal pianists in the New York jazz scene, - 7 records as a leader have appeared on numerous “best records of the year” critic’s lists .. together, they talk about their 11 years in the band and how they have been called – “a group devoted to radical reinvention of famous pop songs and Broadway show tunes. Plenty of contemporary jazz artists do that, but few more divertingly than this vivacious foursome, who delightedly cherish the originals while brusquely deconstructing their harmonies and tweaking their melodies, sometimes only slipping in the original theme on the way out of the piece.
