Jazz Composer & Piainist Sarah Mckenzie

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Composer & Pianist Sarah Mckenzie .. When the corona virus hit in early March., she was just on tour in France and all her shows got cancelled. At the same time the US government implemented a travel ban for everyone who was traveling from the Schengen territory so Sarah was unable to return to her home in Los Angeles immediately. ‘In order not to get stuck during lockdown in a big city – she rented an old school house in the very South of England, in Hastings at the English Channel coast. It was a very romantic place from the 17th century. They had planned to stay for two weeks, in the end it was 3 1/2 months. She explains was ensured .. Enjoy ..

Liverpool-born, Australian Jazz Saxophonist & Composer Ken Stubbs

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Liverpool-born, Australian Jazz Saxophonist & Composer Ken Stubbs .. We talked in the Fall of 2020 during the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic about quite a bit .. Like his latest 2019 CD Big Hush .. He became involved with music after being ‘reborn’, after a near death experience. He was 14. It involved a Football ‘Special’ Train, hundreds of inebriated Glasgow Rangers fans, a fire hammer and axe, 2 near fatalities, him jumping from a train travelling at 70 mph, and several broken limbs. It was then that he decided that this was the wrong game for him, and instead followed his other passion, which was the ‘Northern Soul’ music scene. Then it became jazz .. and now a full career. Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Kansas City based alto saxophonist, composer and educator Christopher Burnett. This is our second interview during the COVID-19 pandemic and it took place on December 17, 2020. We covered a lot of good jazz ground .. Primarily, we discussed his fourth album as a leader titled, The Standards, Vol. 1 on the Artists Recording Collective (ARC) label. While still in college, his big band professor, Albert Alva, introduced him to legendary jazz singer, Barbara Morrison, at Steamers Jazz Club in Southern California. She invited the young singer on the stage with her to sing “Fly Me to the Moon.” The crowd erupted with applause after his performance, and his career in jazz performance unfolded. Jazz Vibraphonist Matt Moran

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Vibraphonist Matt Moran ..We spoke with him back on April 20, 2020 as the COVID-19 world was starting to close in on us all .. He opened up about his life, past and the future .. He was named "Rising Star" on vibraphone by the 2014 Downbeat Critics Poll, but he is just as often known for his work as the drummer and bandleader for brass band Slavic Soul Party! His career exists in diverse musical environments, from chamber music to jazz to Balkan folk music, and evinces a dedication to music education for incarcerated people. He has released 10 albums as a leader, and performed on nearly 100 albums by other artists, including Sufjan Stevens, Theo Bleckmann, William Parker, Ellery Eskelin, and Luciana Souza. He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, studied piano, drums and percussion, taking up guitar studies at fifteen -  He left Boston for further studies at New York University where his teachers included sax titan Joe Lovano and pianist Jim McNeely.
