NYC Drummer, Composer, Bandleader & Educator Matt Kane on the 2018 CD The Other Side of the Story

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Hannibal, MO-born, New York City Jazz Drummer, Artist, Composer, Bandleader & Educator Matt Kane..  This 47-year-old journey jazz cat is at a point in his career where he takes charge from behind the drums, as a jazz artist, composer, and bandleader. The Other Side of the Story is his 4th Album and the first with entirely original compositions from a guy who grew up surrounded by corn fields in Hannibal, Missouri, idolized Tom Sawyer, and played his first gig as a teen aboard a riverboat on the Mississippi. The new project is produced by legendary drummer Michael Carvin and features three fellow Midwesterners: Peter Schlamb on vibraphone, Vic Jerus on guitar, and Mark Peterson on bass, as well as Klaus Mueller on piano. The new album contains a wide swath of rhythm, not just the traditional jazz rhythm folks are used to. He talked to Neon Jazz at length about this project ..

She talked about her latest CD – That’s Time Enough … And she has been at it for some time .. She’s been a professional musician since the age of 13. And in colleged, she worked extensively with free jazz proponent Muhul Richard Abrams. She would go on to earn a Master of Music in piano performance at the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University and opened for jazz legend Stan Kenton, and has appeared at many top Chicago jazz clubs and on television and radio. She has a long and interesting journey ..

Japanese-born NYC Jazz Pianist Yuko Fujiyama

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Japanese Born  / NYC Jazz Pianist Yuko Fujiyama ..She talked about her new CD Night Wave .. Which was her attempt at trying to be free from a feeling of linear time. She was born Sapporo, Japan and started playing piano at the age of four. But it wasn’t until a summer morning in 1980 standing on a sidewalk in New York’s East Village that she found her calling; someone was playing a Cecil Taylor tape and she was transfixed by the piano sounds. That someone was Taylor’s drummer, Jerome Cooper, and that moment opened a door for her to the abstract beauty of music. She has great stories ..

We spoke at length about his latest 2018 CD  - iQba  (iQ-Cuba) – The name is referencing the economic crisis in Cuba in the 1990's.  He was born in Havana, Cuba,  and first encounter with music was through his mother’s womb by the hands of his father, legendary saxophonist and member of Chucho Valdes’s Irakere, Carlos Averhoff, Sr. He would go on to learn from the likes of  luminaries Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, Terri Lyne Carrington and others .. and that has led to collaborations with Louis Hayes, Jimmy Cobb, Bob Moses and many others ..

Pittsburgh-based Jazz Saxophonist DK Anderson

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Saxophonist DK Anderson .. He talked about his latest 2018 CD Quantum Truth and about much more .. Like being born in a mill town kid in the Steel Valley of Pittsburgh and starting his music journey on tenor saxophone at 11 and by 16 playing the piano and getting interested in composition  - So from 2001 to 2007 he was in the Roger Humphries Big Band and it was during 2007 that he stepped away from the public eye for a self-imposed hiatus and immersed himself in the contemplation of music living an ascetic-like life in a small house in the woods listening to the surroundings – Then, got back into the public music scene in 2015 – He’s got a great story ..
