KC Jazz Vocalist Kelley Gant on The Spine Showcases

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with KC-based Jazz Vocalist and Show Organizer Kelley Gant  .. She is spearheading a series of jazz performances titled The Spine Showcases kicking off the second half of its 2019 series with a Kickstarter fundraising campaign. Organized by musicians, the series spotlights Kansas City’s emerging jazz composers. Launched January 24th, 2019 – It’s a diverse range of styles and approaches to jazz are represented .. Like Logan Richardson, Hermon Mehari, Bob Bowman, Peter Schamb, Ryan J. Lee, and so many more .. This is supported in part by the Charlotte Street Foundation and held monthly in the Charlotte Street Capsule Performance Venue ..

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with South Korean-born, NYC Jazz Saxophonist Pureum Jin ..  She talked about her debut album album titled ‘The Real Blue’ with Cellar Live that came out to the world on June 7th, 2019 with an all-star lineup .. She fell in love with jazz early on in her life and relocated to New York in summer 2018 after spending a year in Charlottesville, Virginia .. She was selected as a rising star by Korean jazz magazine ‘Jazz People’ in year 2012 and this new album is a testament to her strong sound and growth in the jazz world .. .so get to know her and dig this interview my friends ..

KC-based Jazz Baritone Saxophonist B.J. Janesen

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with KC-based Jazz Baritone Saxophonist BJ Jansen .. He opened up about his new 2019 CD Tradition .. He was born in Cincinnati and there he established himself as a charismatic and dynamic performer, composer, bandleader and educator on and off the stage.
It all began at 10 when his father bought him an Alto Saxophone and gave him recordings of Gerry Mulligan and Charlie Parker. His musical journey took him from the Midwest to the East Coast when he relocated to Philadelphia in 2004. He spent three years learning on the streets of Philadelphia before relocating yet again to New York City in 2007. And now he is calling Kansas City home and getting involved in a very fruitful scene.  Get know him and dig this interview my friends ..

This album is a collection of compositions based on interviews with people from various cultural communities in Quebec, Canada. He composes for his formations with variable geometry, Odd lot, Litania projekt, or in quintet and for 10 years, he has been playing regularly in Eastern Europe, especially in Poland.

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Singer-Songwriter Steven Blane.  He talked with us about his 2019 CD I Walk Alone .. ." It’s an album comprised of 60’s Rock & Roll, Jazz Story Songs and is recommended if you like Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, and Tom Waits. He has had 7 other official releases
As a young boy in Jersey City, his grandma stood him on a table at a Knights of Pythias Talent Show.  Singing “Delilah,”  Tom Jones style, in front of a supportive audience left a profound effect on Steven .. and since then, he’s been after it on his own .. Steven writes and performs in multiple genres (Americana, Pop, Jazz, Country).

New Orleans-based, Percussionist, Vocalist, Pianist & Songwriter Derrick Freeman of the Soul Brass Band

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with New Orleans-based, virtuoso percussionist, vocalist, pianist, songwriter and music industry veteran of the Soul Brass Band Derrick Freeman ...  He talked about his 2019 CD Levels done with his Soul Brass Band .. This is a great New Orleans Brass Band steeped in tradition that also plays the perfect party .. Originally from Houston, his work includes twenty years of percussion for Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers and a handful of other prominent New Orleans bands and his touring and recording credits with a long list of internationally-cherished bands and musicians; acting and voice credits in TV and Film, most notably in Treme on HBO .. He’s etching great paths ..

Cuban-born Jazz Drummer & Percussionist Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Veteran Cuband-born Jazz Drummer Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez .. He opened up about his latst project .. The 2019 CD Italuba Big Band .. He is one of a new generation of players following in the footsteps of countrymen Arturo Sandoval and Paquito D'Rivera. His drumming reflects a musical heritage rooted in folklore tradition and he first gained international recognition as the drummer for the pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Since leaving Cuba in 1990, he has played in the U.S. with many different pop, rock, jazz and Latin jazz acts, including on many albums, some of which have received Grammy awards .. and these days, he is the leader of his own Latin Jazz ensemble, as composer and drummer and has also produced several instructional books and videos.

He has earned a growing reputation of being at the forefront of creative musicians working in New York City.  Known for his brilliant improvisations and his compelling, melodic compositions, he melds the various styles, phrasings and concepts of the jazz idiom with the raw elements of soul, rock and funk, to create a singular sound that is inspiring.
