Veteran Jazz Pianist, Composer & Educator Karl Berger

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Veteran Jazz Musician Karl Berger .. He grew up in Heidelberg, Germany and started to play piano at 10 and worked in his teens at a club  .. He learned modern jazz from visiting American musicians like Don Ellis and Leo Wright. During the 1960s, he started playing vibraphone and received a doctoral degree in musicology and worked as a member of Don Cherry's band in Paris. He would end up in New York City and with Ornette Coleman created the Creative Music Studio .. He’s a six time winner of the Downbeat Critics Poll as a jazz soloist and quite a Professor ..

Brooklyn Jazz Pianist Julia Chen

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Brooklyn Jazz Pianist Julia Chen – She talked to us about her debut EP Silver Spoons and how she started her life off as a shy bespectacled child learning to rely on music to express her personality and connect with others in ways she couldn't with words. Raised in Brooklyn by parents from Poland and China, she grew up learning piano by ear from her mother who was a poet and mathematician. She would go on to get a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Piano Performance and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the Oberlin College and Conservatory in Ohio. And she made her way back to New York to form her rendessvous trio .. and so much more ..

Israeli-born Jazz Guitarist Gilad Hekselman

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Guitarist Gilad Hekselman .. He talked about his latest 2018 CD – Ask for Chaos and his childhood in Israel and how he studied classical piano from age 6 and began studying guitar at the age of 9. From age 12 to 14 he performed regularly with the band of a weekly children's television show and since coming to New York in 2004 he has established a reputation as one of the most promising guitarists playing at all major jazz clubs in New York City like the Blue Note, The Jazz Standard, Dizzy's Club and Smalls.

Japanese-born/NYC Jazz Pianist Miki Yamanaka

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Pianist Miki Yamanaka.. She gre up in Kobe, Japan and moved to New York City in 2012 to study Piano with Jason Lindner, Jeb Patton, and Fred Hersch, and Organ with Sam Yahel and Larry Goldings. In 2015 she was one of three pianists selected to participate in “Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead” and recently earned her Master of Music degree from Queens College, receiving the Sir Roland Hanna Award. She is promoting her newest album simply called Miki and has much to say ..
