Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Pianist and Composer Helen Sung “Sung With Words” came to be as a result of becoming friends with poet (& former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts) Dana Gioia. Together we have created a set of jazz songs – he’s written new poems and I use their words as lyrics for new songs. One of the main inspirations behind the project is my fascination with the connection vocalists have with the listener via words.
