NYC-based Jazz Vocalist, Composer, Producer & Scholar Jen Shyu

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with NYC-based Jazz Vocalist, Composer, Producer & Scholar Jen Shyu .. We caught up with her in Queens to talk about her latest 2021 CD with Jade Tongue called Zero Grasses: Ritual for the Losses .. She was born in Peoria, Illinois, to Taiwanese and East Timorese immigrant parents and has gone on to become a 2019 Guggenheim Fellow, 2019 United States Artists Fellow, 2016 Doris Duke Artist, and was voted 2017 Downbeat Critics Poll Rising Star Female Vocalist. Over the years, she has performed with the likes of Nicole Mitchell, Anthony Braxton, Wadada Leo Smith, Steve Coleman, Vijay Iyer, Chris Potter all over the world .. Enjoy her story ..
