Veteran Jazz Pianist, Composer and Arranger Bill O’Connell

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Pianist, Composer and Arranger Bill O’Connell  .. Hew grew up in New York and started playing the piano when he was younger .. a calling that he knew would lead to a career in music .. With his Latin All Star’s –- He just released a 2016 called Heart Beat and stays very active on the jazz faculty of Rutgers University – Over his long and storied jazz existence, he has played with legends .. like Mongo Santamaria, Sonny Rollins, Chet Baker, Gato Barbieri  and Astrud Gilberto – He spoke openly about his career, what he tries to give his students these days, why he loves jazz and much more ..

Legendary Jazz Drummer, Pianist, Vibraphonist & Composer Joe Chambers

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with J Jazz Drummer, Pianist,  Vibraphonist & Composer Joe Chambers  .. He was born and bred in Philadelphia and he talked at length about a great many things .. His newest album – full of sound and beautiful vibes is called Landscapes and prior to that he released Moving Pictures Orchestra – Live at Dizzy’s Coca Cola – He spent a year at the Philadelphia Conservatory and would go on to captivate the world after moving to NYC in 1963 – He would play on Freddie Hubbard’s LP Breaking Point – give with the best in avante garde jazz .. with cats like Eric Dolphy – then  gig with the likes of  Charles Mingus, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Hutcherson, McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea .. His mentor is Max Roach and he has been a part of Roach's M'Boom percussion ensemble – He’s full of good stories, wisdom an cool ..

Jazz Guitar Legend Ed Cherry

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Guitar Legend Ed Cherry  .. He grew up in New Haven, Connecticut .. He started out on the Clarinet and had dreams of playing professional baseball .. when that wasn’t going to be a reality, he picked up the guitar and his path led to New York City and in 1978 he hooked up with legendary jazz cat Dizzy Gillespie forging a long playing relationship full of great music .. He has a new 2016 out called Soul Tree and it’s a phenomenal listen and is doing great on the charts .. he’s spent a lot of time as studio musician and he loves jazz ..

Kansas City Jazz/Folk Band Victor & Penny

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Kansas City Jazz Group Victor and Penny – known as band leaders Jeff Freling and Erin McGrane joined by the Loose Change Orchestra – They were on their way to Oklahoma to promote their new 2016 album – Electricity – and this latest release from the Kansas City prohibition jazz outfit is the culmination of 160,000 miles, 5 years and nearly 1,000 performances .. They have been together since 2010 and love bringing the music to fans in Kansas City and around the country .. They spoke about a wide array of things during our discussion ..

NYC Jazz Band Spin Cycle

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Tom Christensen and Scott Neumann of the NYC Jazz Collective – The Spin Cycle  - They have a new 2016 CD that came out simply called Spin Cycle .. They will have a CD Release at NYC’s very own Smalls on May 6, 2016 – This collective of Tom, Scott, Pete McCann and Phil Palombi came together in 2014 but are the culmination of decades of playing on their own all over the jazz world .. Collectively they have gigged with the likes of Joe Lovano, Woody Herman, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Maynard Ferguson, Jack McDuff and Lee Konitz - been on scores of albums, won grammys and published numerous books .. We discussed their lives in jazz and the world of music today versus 30 years ago ..

Jazz Harmonica & Vibraphonist Hendrik Meurkens

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with J Jazz Harmonica & Vibraphonist Hendrik Meurkens  .. He grew up in Germany and made his way to America to study at the Berklee School of Music .. He just released a new straight ahead jazz album – 2016’s Harmonicus Rex .. But, he has a deep affection for Latin Jazz after spending some quality time in the 1980’s in Rio in the samba and bassa nova traditions .. He’s gigged with legends over the years .. Charlie Byrd, Jimmy Cobb, Monty Alexander, and  Astrid Gilberto  - His story in jazz is very textured and interesting ..
