Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with St. Louis-based Jazz Saxophonist, Composer & Educator Bennett Wood .. We delved into his new 2024 CD Space in Time that serves as his debut as a leader, along with getting into his life as a a freelance musician, composer and clinician. The title track on this new album draws inspiration from the books Only the Ball Was White by Robert Peterson and The Baseball 100 by Joe Posnanski. Both works highlight the incredible athletic feats and adversity faced by black baseball players in the professional negro leagues. He was recently appointed as Director of Jazz Studies at Webster University and is an experienced bandleader and an in-demand sideman. We get into quite a bit. Enjoy.
