Brooklyn-based Jazz Pianist & Composer Esteban Castro on the Gilmore Award & More

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Brooklyn-based Jazz Pianist & Composer Esteban Castro. We caught up with this rising jazz star to discuss his journey in music and his recognition as the recipient of The Gilmore’s inaugural 2026 Larry J. Bell Young Jazz Artist Award. This honor comes with a $25,000 stipend to further his musical career and educational development.

Esteban began playing piano at age three, quickly showing a gift for improvisation and composition. In 2020, he began his studies at the Juilliard School and has since performed nationally and internationally as a leader. His story is one of early talent, hard work, and a bright future in jazz.
